Biography

Andrew Hussey is a cultural historian and biographer.

He grew up in Liverpool, and studied at Manchester and Lyons universities. After teaching in Manchester, Dijon, Barcelona and Aberystwyth, he joined the University of London in Paris in 2006, where he is now Professor of French and Comparative Literature.

He is the author of two books about Georges Bataille: The Beast at Heaven's Gate: Georges Bataille and the Art of Transgression (2006); and The Inner Scar: The Mysticism of Georges Bataille (2000). His acclaimed biography of Guy Debord, The Game of War, was published in 2001, and named as an International Book of the Year by the Times Literary Supplement. Paris: The Secret History (2006) was shortlisted for the Prix Grandgousier (France) in 2008. Further books are Paris: The Secret History (2006), a study of the English in Paris during the French Revolution, and a book entitled The French Intifada: The Long War Between France and its Arabs (2014).

He writes for The Observer and The Guardian, and a monthly column on European Literature for the New Statesman. He was writer in residence in Morocco for the British Council in 2002, and is Literary Director of the Médi-Café Project in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Andrew Hussey has recently become Contributing Editor for Granta magazine. He lives in Paris.
