Dickens 2012

Global Dickens Read-a-thon

On 7th February the British Council marked the bicentenary of Dickens' birth with a global read-a-thon. Countries from all across the globe read an extract from a different Dickens text, one every hour from China to Pakistan, Albania to Russia.

Each five minute reading was uploaded onto our @BritishCouncil twitter feed and onto the #Dickens2012 stream: on the hour, every hour.

The global event started at 7am and was followed by readings from countries such as China, Russia, Albania and Pakistan, carrying on until 6am the following morning.

At 7pm the UK also took part in the read-a-thon with a live reading of ‘Great Expectations’ from David Nicholls at the BFI as part of Film London and the British Council’s UK celebrations.

A short film of the readings, and more information about them, can be found here.
