Readings, performances, a whole month of film screenings and even a dedicated exhibition was kick-started with a creative writing competition to write about Singapore as Dickens might have done.
The talented winner was Resham Premchand with her short story ‘Silence’, a piece inspired by Dickens’ classic ‘A Christmas Carol’.
Resham says of her winning piece: This story was inspired by Charles Dickens’ 'A Christmas Carol' and focused on Scrooge. I wanted to have a modern take on self-awareness. One can have all the riches of the world and still be quite mean and distrustful of others’ intention or believe in simple acts of kindness in this modern era.
Runner ups include Benjamin Goh who wrote a piece on Estella from 'Great Expectations' and Lim Jiaying who wrote a piece about a modern-day Artful Dodger from 'Oliver'.
